Miguel Gutierrez, for long, was seen as a strong candidate to return to Real Madrid to reinforce the left-back position – one that the club saw as relatively compromised with just Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia.
Eventually, however, Los Blancos opted to sign Alvaro Carreras as their new left-back and even made him the second most expensive defensive signing in the club’s history, something that all but closes the door for Gutierrez to return.
The player, thus, has been linked with other top European clubs as he eyes a move away from Girona where he has spent the last three seasons. Napoli have emerged as the clear favourite to sign him.
As confirmed by Fabrizio Romano in a recent report, Napoli are nearing completion in the signing of Gutierrez and the deal could well go through in the coming days.

The rumoured transfer fee, as it stands, is over €18 million in which comes as massive news to the Real Madrid offices. After all, the club retain 50% of the player’s rights as part of the agreement with Girona.
Los Blancos, thus, could well pocket over €9 million from the transaction involving Girona and Napoli and will hope the deal comes to fruition at the earliest.
Previous reports have suggested a €25 million asking fee from the La Liga side and Real Madrid could thus gain even more if they stand their ground.
Over the past three seasons, the 24-year-old defender established himself as one of the league’s most well-rounded full-backs as he was both defensively stable and valuable in the final third.
Last season, he made 29 appearances with one goal and five assists to show. He also oversaw five clean sheets and averaged over six defensive actions per game.
