Real Madrid are gearing up for a crucial phase ahead, where their lack of depth in the defensive unit could be tested.

The reigning European champions have been recently dealt with a blow, with Antonio Rudiger picking up a fresh injury.

This leaves Real Madrid with no viable centre-back options apart from David Alaba, Raul Asencio and Aurelien Tchouameni.

David Alaba set for a start?

It is no secret that Carlo Ancelotti has always been iffy about starting either Asencio or Tchouameni at centre-back.

Keeping that in mind, the Italian could be tempted to consider starting Alaba in the upcoming game against Leganes, reports MARCA.

It must be noted that Alaba has impressed everyone since returning from a long injury layoff. Despite his limited appearances, the Austrian has offered stability and leadership at the back, both on and off the pitch.

While it remains to be seen whether or not Alaba is fit enough to start a game, the Leganes match could be an ideal acid test.

The onus will be on the veteran defender to step up his game and provide the leadership Real Madrid desperately require in the defensive unit.

Not to mention, Alaba’s physical display against Leganes could go a long way in determining whether or not the player is ready to take on Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.

Although Rudiger’s injury is not serious, reports suggest the German international could miss both the matches against the Premier League champions, thus making Alaba’s presence even more important.
