A highly-regarded up-and-coming member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid has agreed to the terms of a new contract with the club.

That’s according to Blancos insider Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, who points towards Joan Martínez as the player in question.

Youngster Joan, for his part, is of course sidelined long-term at present.

As much comes after the stopper suffered a torn ACL whilst in training during pre-season.

Prior to as much, though, the Spaniard was making a name for himself as one of the standout breakthrough talents at Valdebebas.

Despite his tender years – he only recently turned 17 – Joan did enough to secure a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s first-team setup in Madrid over the summer.

Not only that, but, amid the lack of options at the heart of defence in Real’s squad, the understanding is that the Alginet native was pushing for a permanent spot in the club’s senior setup for the season ahead.

Joan’s long-term injury setback put a stop to as much, but, evidently, faith in his talents remains high in the Spanish capital.

As per a report from the aforementioned Mario Cortegana:

‘Real Madrid have reached an agreement in principle with 17-year-old centre-back Joan Martinez over the renewal of his contract.’

The deal in question is expected to run through the summer of 2027, and will feature both a new €50 million release clause, and a vastly increased salary for Joan.
