Referee chiefs back Atalanta equaliser but say Inter penalty was missed

Gazzetta reports that referee chiefs deemed the build-up to Atalanta’s equaliser against Inter legitimate, but believed the league leaders should have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Davide Frattesi in Saturday’s 1-1 draw.

Inter protested the leveller, arguing Kamaldeen Sulemana pushed Denzel Dumfries before referee Gianluca Manganiello allowed play to continue and Nikola Krstovic scored.

Minutes later Giorgio Scalvini challenged Frattesi in the box, making contact, and Manganiello again waved play on.

The decisions infuriated the Nerazzurri, who declined to speak to the media after the match.

The assessment judged the non-intervention correct for the goal but said a penalty should have been awarded for Scalvini’s foul. It placed greater responsibility on Manganiello than on the VAR and noted frustration that no pitchside review was suggested.

Manganiello is not expected to take a Serie A appointment next week as part of routine rotation. He will return after the international break, though it is unclear whether that will be in Serie A or Serie B.
