Régis Le Bris has outlined Sunderland’s summer transfer priorities as the club prepares to juggle Premier League and Europa League football.
“It’s going to be different because, on average, a team who starts in Europe is supposed to lose 10 points in the league.” He told The Telegraph.
“So it’s a big challenge. We’ll need three or four more consistent players in different positions, so that we can manage the schedule. And it’s clear, we need to recover quickly, we need to prepare quickly, we need to debrief quickly. So it’s going to be challenging. But it’s not boring, and everybody should be excited.”
Sunderland clinched a Europa League spot on the final day against Chelsea, finishing seventh in their first season back in the top flight. It is the club’s first European campaign since 1973-74 and only their fifth top-flight top-10 in 70 years.
Next season brings at least eight Europa League games alongside the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. After more than a dozen signings last summer, Sunderland now aim to add quality without disturbing the balance under Le Bris.
Pre-season is due to start in early July, with York City first on Saturday, July 18. The Black Cats then face Liverpool, Leeds United and Wrexham in the United States, followed by a double-header with RC Lens in Europe, and Stade Rennais at home on Saturday, August 15.
