Renato Gaúcho is no longer Vasco manager, departing before club football resumes after pressure that began with dressing-room tensions and reached the hierarchy.
According to Globo.com, several players were irked by recent comments. The first flashpoint came when he was asked about Marino Hinestroza’s poor form, and he said footballers born in Colombia and Ecuador struggle to adapt to the Brazilian game.
That line upset the squad’s four Colombians, Marino, Andrés Gómez, Cuesta and Rojas, and drew international reaction. It also landed badly with team-mates who enjoy a strong relationship with the quartet.
More unease followed as press conferences saw him call for reinforcements, complain of limited bench options and stress Vasco’s poor start to the Brasileiro, one point from the first four rounds before his arrival.
On 26 April, after a 1-0 defeat at Corinthians despite a man advantage throughout the second half, Renato distanced himself from blame. On 24 May, during a 3-0 home loss to Bragantino, he gestured towards the stands when abused by fans, as if questioning his responsibility.
His training methods were another fault line, with early sessions contrasting markedly with those of Fernando Diniz in the view of players and directors. Internally he was seen as having lost part of the group, with Thiago Mendes and Hugo Moura among the few remaining close to him.
Vasco are due back at CT Moacyr Barbosa next Monday. The club have four weeks to prepare for the return of domestic football, and the board hope to have a new head coach in place by then.
