Paris Saint-Germain are exploring a move for Lucas Digne, according to Sports View, in a development that could hand Aston Villa another significant issue in an already demanding window. The 32-year-old defender is understood to be on PSG’s radar, with his contractual situation giving the French champions a clear route to act swiftly.
This would be a notable return for a player who previously represented PSG from 2013 to 2016. As the original report states, “This move would mark a full-circle moment for the 32-year-old defender, who previously played for PSG from 2013 to 2016.” That history, combined with Digne’s experience and reliability, helps explain why he has emerged as a serious option.
Digne’s standing has grown again on the back of France’s strong 2026 FIFA World Cup run. “Digne’s profile has risen considerably in recent years, highlighted by his prominent role for France during their successful 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in North America.” He also “played the full 90 minutes in Les Bleus’ 2-0 quarter-final win over Morocco”, underlining his fitness, pedigree and continued value at elite level.
For PSG, the attraction is clear. “PSG have identified Digne as an ideal solution to strengthen their defensive depth,” and crucially, “the release clause in his current Villa contract allows them to bypass direct club-to-club negotiations.” That detail leaves Villa vulnerable if the player decides the opportunity suits him.

Villa are already trying to manage multiple pressures across the squad. “The Midlands club are currently battling to keep key first-team players, fending off Arsenal’s pursuit of Morgan Rogers and rejecting lowball offers for goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.” Elsewhere, “A long-term knee injury to midfielder Amadou Onana has forced Villa into the market for Johan Manzambi as they prepare to bid farewell to Youri Tielemans, who is set to join Manchester United.”
Against that backdrop, losing Digne now would be awkward and expensive to solve. As Sports View reports, “Losing a dependable and experienced full-back like Digne due to a sudden activation of a release clause would further complicate Villa’s squad planning.” No final call is expected immediately, because “with the defender currently focused on international duty, no definitive decision will be made until France’s World Cup campaign concludes.”
From an Aston Villa perspective, this is the kind of report that lands with real shock, even in a summer already full of noise. Digne may not always dominate headlines, but he has been one of those players you notice most when he is missing. Calm on the ball, experienced in big games and capable of delivering genuine quality from the left, he gives Villa balance.
That is why the idea of PSG moving through a release clause feels especially frustrating. It would take control away from Villa at a time when the club already seem to have enough on their plate. If Morgan Rogers is attracting attention, Emiliano Martínez is drawing bids and midfield plans are changing, then the last thing needed is more instability in defence.
There is also the emotional side of it. Supporters can accept change when it feels strategic, but losing a trusted senior player because another club can simply trigger a clause feels different. It feels abrupt. It feels like poor timing. And it would leave Villa needing to solve yet another important position in a market where prices move quickly.
The hope for fans will be that Digne’s focus remains on France for now and that Villa use that time wisely. If PSG are serious, Villa need to be ready with a plan immediately. Surprise can be tolerated for a day, but not for an entire transfer window.
