Chelsea have shown interest in signing Nuno Tavares, who is on loan at Lazio from Arsenal this season.
That is according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla on his website.
Pedulla has claimed that Lazio are in talks with Chelsea over signing Cesare Casadei in the January transfer window.
The 22-year-old Italian midfielder, who has had loan spells at Reading and Leicester City in recent years, has struggled to get into Enzo Maresca’s first team this season.
Casadei has played just once in the Carabao Cup and has made three starts in the UEFA Conference League. The midfielder has not featured in a single Premier League game this campaign.
According to Pedulla, during talks with Lazio over Casadei, Chelsea “asked for information” about Tavares “predictably for next summer”.
The well-known and well-respected Italian journalist has claimed that Lazio have no intention of selling Tavares in the summer of 2025 unless they get an offer that they cannot refuse.
The 24-year-old Portugal international left-back moved to Serie A outfit Lazio on a season-long loan deal from Arsenal in the summer of 2024.
Lazio reportedly have an option to make the deal permanent. The option will become an obligation if certain sporting conditions are met.
Tavares is only 24, and he is doing well in Italy. He has been a star in Serie A for Lazio this season and has been very good at left-back.
The Portugal international has made 15 starts and one substitute appearance in Serie A this season, providing eight assists in the process.
However, Tavares struggled to make an impact at Arsenal. The 24-year-old was sent out on loan to Marseille and then Nottingham Forest before he joined Lazio on a similar temporary deal.
It would be unwise of Chelsea to think that the left-back would be able to become a star in the Premier League after his disappointing spell at Arsenal.
Yes, Chelsea need a new left-back, but the London club have to find someone better and more proven than Tavares.
