Riccardo Calafiori’s future at Arsenal is in doubt, with Chelsea reportedly monitoring the Italy international’s situation as the defender grows increasingly frustrated with his lack of regular first-team football at the Emirates.
The former Bologna man has found himself marginalised since returning from a muscle injury in late January, with Piero Hincapie having established himself as Mikel Arteta’s preferred left-sided centre-back.
Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen is set to become permanent for around £40 million this summer, effectively pushing Calafiori further down the pecking order, and when Arteta has deployed the Italian, it has largely been at left-back rather than his preferred central defensive role.

According to journalist Si Phillips, who specialises in Chelsea coverage, via TeamTalk, Liam Rosenior’s side are ready to move if any opportunity presents itself, describing the potential transfer as “not as impossible as you might expect.”
Calafiori, it is claimed, is eager for both regular football and a return to playing in his natural position.
Any deal would be far from straightforward. Arsenal paid €44 million to sign Calafiori from Bologna and would demand considerably more from a direct London rival, particularly given his age, his contract running until 2029, and his established Premier League pedigree.
For Italy fans, however, ensuring one of the Azzurri’s most promising defenders is playing regularly ahead of the World Cup will feel like the most pressing concern of all.
