FC Barcelona recently announced the two-year contract extension for defender Andreas Christensen until 2028.
Club president Joan Laporta personally pushed for Christensen’s renewal after the Danish defender suffered a serious injury that ruled him out for the second half of the last season while approaching the final months of his previous contract.
As already reported, the 30-year-old centre-back’s new deal contains a clause that allows the club to terminate the agreement after the first season under certain conditions.
Indeed, even though Christensen signed a two-year extension, Barça have protected themselves with an important contractual provision.
If the defender fails to appear in at least 30% of Barcelona’s official matches during the first season of the agreement, the club will have the right to terminate the second year of his contract unilaterally, reports MARCA.

Barcelona would still be required to pay Christensen a small compensation fee, but they would not be obliged to honour the full second season of the deal.
Whether the clause becomes relevant will largely depend on Christensen’s physical condition.
The Danish international has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons, limiting his availability. If he remains fit, however, he should have little difficulty reaching the required number of appearances.
After all, Christensen is valued by manager Hansi Flick for his versatility, technical ability and tactical intelligence.

Unlike many of Barcelona’s international players, Christensen did not participate in the World Cup.
As a result, he will be available from the very start of pre-season when the squad returns to training on 13 July, giving him valuable time to rebuild his fitness and strengthen his position ahead of the new campaign.
As part of the new deal, Christensen has accepted a significant pay cut as part of the agreement. His guaranteed salary has been reduced by around half compared to previous seasons.
However, the contract includes a series of performance-related bonuses that could allow the former Chelsea star to earn close to his previous wages if he reaches specific objectives.
