Milan intensify move for Liverpool striker amid Napoli collapse

AC Milan have made initial contact over a potential deal for Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez, as the Serie A giants seek to reinforce their attacking options under newly re-appointed head coach Massimiliano Allegri.

The 25-year-old Uruguay international is widely expected to leave Anfield this summer following a peripheral role in Arne Slot’s title-winning campaign. Despite Liverpool’s dominance in the Premier League, Nunez featured in just eight league starts last season, raising questions about his long-term future on Merseyside.

Interest from Napoli emerged earlier in the window, with Antonio Conte identifying Nunez as a primary forward option. Negotiations progressed with Liverpool, who were reportedly open to a discounted sale, but talks broke down due to a failure to reach a fee agreement. Napoli have since pivoted to Udinese striker Lorenzo Lucca, completing that deal late last month.

Milan’s shortlist led by Liverpool forward

With Napoli out of the running, Milan have taken a front-foot approach. Sources in Italy, including Sky Sports, suggest that the Rossoneri have reached out to Nunez’s representatives and are considering a formal proposal.

The forward is understood to be Milan’s preferred choice ahead of other attacking targets including Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund and Rennes forward Arnaud Kalimuendo. Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal have also registered interest, but Nunez is thought to favour remaining in Europe.

Liverpool’s openness to a sale reflects a broader strategic shift under Slot, with the club aiming to recalibrate its forward line while securing funds to strengthen in other areas.

Liverpool target Isak as potential replacement

Liverpool’s pursuit of a long-term replacement appears to be focused on Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak. The Reds have already had an opening bid of £110 million turned down by the Tyneside club, who are reluctant to sell unless a suitable replacement is secured.

Newcastle, led by Eddie Howe, are actively monitoring options including Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa. The Magpies remain firm in their valuation of Isak, which is believed to be in the region of £150 million.

Despite the initial setback, Liverpool are expected to return with an improved offer in the coming days. Slot and the club’s sporting director remain keen on securing a proven Premier League goalscorer ahead of a congested 2025/26 fixture schedule.

Reshaping the Liverpool attack

Should Nunez depart, it would bring an end to a mixed two-year spell at Anfield following his £85 million move from Benfica. While flashes of quality were evident, consistency and injuries limited his impact. His departure, however, could open the door to a younger, more adaptable front line as Slot looks to imprint his identity on the squad.

Liverpool have already completed deals for Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike — signalling a proactive summer in the transfer market.

With interest heating up around both Nunez and Isak, the next few weeks are likely to be pivotal in shaping Liverpool’s attacking direction for the new season.
