Manchester United Eye Matias Fernandez-Pardo as Rashford Replacement

Manchester United’s summer recruitment plans appear to be widening, with Gazzetta Dello Sport reporting that Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo has emerged as a player of interest at Old Trafford.

Midfield reinforcements remain high on United’s agenda, but the attacking department now looks equally urgent. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Rasmus Hojlund are all expected to leave permanently during the window, creating space, responsibility and pressure in a forward line that needs pace, flexibility and sharper end product.

Fernandez-Pardo fits the type of profile United have increasingly been drawn towards. At 21, he is young enough to develop, experienced enough to contribute, and versatile enough to offer cover across multiple attacking roles. He can operate wide or through the middle, which makes him particularly attractive for a squad that needs both depth and tactical options.

Fernandez-Pardo Profile Appeals to Old Trafford

The Lille attacker enjoyed an impressive campaign in France, registering eight goals and six assists in 40 appearances across all competitions. Those numbers suggest a player still developing his efficiency, but already capable of influencing matches at senior level.

United’s interest also comes at a time when competition for his signature is growing. Newcastle United are said to view Fernandez-Pardo as a leading candidate to replace Anthony Gordon, following his £70m move to Barcelona. Manchester City are also understood to be monitoring the Belgian, with his ability to play across the frontline seen as a major asset.

That level of interest matters. United have often struggled when entering crowded transfer races, particularly when rivals can offer clearer sporting structures or Champions League certainty. Any move for Fernandez-Pardo would therefore need conviction, speed and a persuasive development plan.

World Cup Could Shape Transfer Valuation

Fernandez-Pardo’s involvement with Belgium at this summer’s World Cup adds another layer to the situation. Lille will naturally hope strong performances on the international stage increase his valuation, particularly if multiple Premier League clubs remain active in the background.

For United, timing may prove crucial. Moving before the tournament could present better value, but waiting may provide greater evidence of whether he can handle elite pressure. That balance between opportunity and risk is central to modern recruitment.

Michael Carrick has already acknowledged that left wing is an area United need to strengthen. Now installed permanently, he is likely to push for attacking additions that suit a more dynamic, direct approach. Fernandez-Pardo’s profile appears to align with that thinking.

Smart Gamble or Statement Move?

This would not be the most high-profile forward deal United could pursue, but it may be one of the more intelligent. Fernandez-Pardo would not arrive as a guaranteed star, nor should he be sold as an instant Rashford replacement in emotional terms. Rashford’s story at United carries weight that statistics cannot fully capture.

Yet from a squad-building perspective, the logic is clear. United need younger forwards with hunger, positional variety and resale value. If the fee remains below the inflated figures often attached to Premier League targets, Fernandez-Pardo could represent a smart market opportunity.

The risk is obvious. United cannot afford another attacking signing who requires patience without providing immediate contribution. But if Carrick wants intensity, flexibility and room for growth, Fernandez-Pardo is a name worth taking seriously.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Manchester United perspective, this report will probably create cautious interest rather than wild excitement. Fernandez-Pardo sounds like the kind of player United should be scouting, young, quick, technically promising and not yet carrying superstar wages or superstar baggage.

The key concern is whether United are signing a player for a defined role or simply reacting to a market opportunity. Fans have seen too many forwards arrive without a clear attacking plan around them. If Rashford, Sancho and Hojlund all leave, United cannot replace them with potential alone. They need goals, leadership and consistency.

That said, there is a lot to like here. Fernandez-Pardo’s eight goals and six assists at Lille suggest a player moving in the right direction, and his versatility could be valuable across a long season. If Newcastle and Manchester City are also interested, United cannot afford to move slowly.

Supporters will want Carrick and the recruitment team to be decisive. If Fernandez-Pardo is the right fit, get the deal done before the World Cup inflates the price. If he is only one name on a long list, United must avoid another summer of drifting. This feels like a gamble, but potentially a sensible one.
