United, it seems, are willing to do exactly that.

Hall’s appeal is easy to understand. He is comfortable as a conventional full-back, can move inside when required and has already shown the level of intelligence needed to operate in different structures. That versatility is highly valued at elite clubs, especially when squad building is being done with both immediate needs and long-term development in mind.

United are planning with discipline rather than waiting on one outcome. As TeamTalk reports, “Jorge Salinas has emerged as one of the leading alternatives should a deal for Hall fail to materialise”, and the Spain Under-19 international is rapidly building a strong reputation.

The 19-year-old enhanced that standing during Spain’s UEFA European Under-19 Championship triumph in Wales, where he was “one of the standout performers throughout the tournament”. United scouts used that opportunity to watch him closely, and those checks appear to have been positive enough to move him quickly up the shortlist.

Salinas is already viewed as one of Racing Santander’s key young assets after helping the club to promotion by winning the Segunda Division title last season. There is now an obvious sense that he may be ready for a bigger stage. United’s recruitment team reportedly believe “Salinas is capable of making the step up to first-team football immediately”, which is a powerful endorsement for a player of his age.

The challenge, however, is substantial. Barcelona “have already held talks over a deal and remain favourites to sign Salinas”, although the Spanish side have yet to meet Racing’s valuation. The current gap is clear, Racing want around €16million, while Barcelona are said to be unwilling to go beyond €8million at this stage. Atletico Madrid are also in the picture, leaving United with serious competition if they choose to accelerate.

There is a further wrinkle to this market. Alejandro Balde also remains under observation from United, according to the report, with the suggestion that any Barcelona move for Salinas could eventually affect Balde’s longer-term future at Camp Nou.

That does not mean Balde is the immediate play, and the article is clear enough on the pecking order. “For now, though, Hall remains the priority.” That line captures where matters currently stand. United are focused on a proven Premier League option first, while keeping younger and potentially more attainable alternatives active in the background.

It is a sensible way to approach a difficult position in the market. Hall would be the statement signing, a player with top-level experience and room to grow further. Salinas would represent a different sort of investment, perhaps with greater risk, but also major promise and a lower entry point, even at €16million. Balde sits somewhere in a more complicated bracket, talented, established and dependent on wider movement in Barcelona’s squad planning.

Beyond left-back, TeamTalk notes Wilcox also wants to strengthen the attack, with links elsewhere continuing to circulate. Yet this feels like one of the more defined strands of United’s summer. The need is clear, the shortlist is active, and the decision-makers appear aligned.

From a Manchester United fan’s perspective, this report makes a lot of sense. Lewis Hall feels like the right kind of target for where the club should be going, young enough to improve, good enough to start, and already experienced in the Premier League. If United truly believe he is the answer, then they should be brave and back that judgement. £60m is a big fee, but top young English players with tactical versatility cost serious money.

What is encouraging here is the structure. There seems to be a clear first choice, but also a genuine Plan B in Jorge Salinas. For too long, United have looked reactive in the market. This sounds more thought through. Salinas being described as ready “to make the step up to first-team football immediately” is the sort of detail fans want to hear, because it suggests proper scouting work has been done.

If Hall is available, many supporters would see him as an ideal signing for the next phase of the rebuild. He could solve a persistent problem area and give United more balance. If Newcastle dig in, then moving quickly for Salinas would still show ambition and planning. Either way, this is the profile United should be targeting, hungry, upwardly mobile defenders with quality on the ball and the capacity to grow into major players at Old Trafford.
