Charlotte interest adds uncertainty to Elliott loan spell

Sky Sports have outlined fresh uncertainty around Harvey Elliott’s short term future, with Dean Smith confirming that Charlotte FC are exploring a potential move. For Elliott, it is another reminder that a season intended to accelerate his development has instead stalled.

Elliott joined Aston Villa on loan from Liverpool last summer, with the deal set to become permanent if he reaches a specified number of appearances. That trigger has remained distant. Five outings across all competitions underline how peripheral he has been.

Smith outlines MLS option

Smith, now in charge at Charlotte, admitted he made discreet enquiries during a Christmas visit to Villa Park. Speaking to Sky Sports News, he said: “I put the feelers out, obviously, when I was over there. I was thinking about it and thought, there is an opportunity here.

“If he is not going to play at Villa and he can’t play anywhere else, then it would be an option for him to come and play some games up until the World Cup break.

“If he is not playing between now and the World Cup, it is a shame. There is an opportunity for him to come out and play here if that is what Liverpool or Villa wanted to do.”

Villa stance already clear

Earlier this month, Villa head coach Unai Emery acknowledged the club’s doubts, saying they “decided two months ago we were not convinced to sign him, spending the money we need”. With the MLS window opening on January 26, Elliott’s options may soon narrow to playing time over permanence.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

For Liverpool supporters, this situation feels increasingly frustrating. Elliott remains a player of obvious technical quality, yet his loan spell has offered little rhythm or confidence. Five appearances is not development, it is limbo. Watching his minutes drift away while decisions are delayed does neither the player nor Liverpool any favours.

The MLS option will divide opinion. Some fans will worry it represents a step sideways at a crucial age, away from the intensity of English football. Others will see logic in prioritising minutes over prestige. A young player needs games, not good intentions. Sitting unused on a bench helps no one.

There is also a broader concern about loan strategy. Liverpool sent Elliott to Villa believing the pathway was clear, only for circumstances to change quickly. That miscalculation has left Elliott exposed. Supporters will hope the club now takes firmer control, whether that means sanctioning a short term MLS move or recalling him to find a better fit.

What matters most is clarity. Elliott needs to be playing regularly before his momentum erodes further. Talent alone is not enough. Opportunity, timing and decisive planning matter just as much.
