Newcastle Land Key Defensive Target as Thiaw Deal Agreed

Newcastle United have secured a significant breakthrough in their summer transfer plans with the agreement of a £34.3 million deal for AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw, as reported by the Daily Mail. The 24-year-old German centre-back is set to travel to Tyneside for a medical, in what is expected to be one of Eddie Howe’s most important acquisitions of the window.

The agreement comes after weeks of slow progress in the market, with Newcastle working to strengthen their defensive depth ahead of the new season. Thiaw’s arrival will take the club’s tally of senior central defenders to five, providing additional competition for Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn.

“Long term, Newcastle will see Thiaw, 24, as the right-sided replacement for Schar, who turns 34 in December,” the Daily Mail report noted.

The move effectively ends any lingering interest in Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, a player the Magpies pursued heavily last summer without success.

Thiaw’s addition represents both a short-term boost and a long-term succession plan. His profile fits Newcastle’s defensive requirements perfectly. Strong in aerial duels, tactically disciplined and comfortable in possession, the former Schalke man has developed significantly during his time at AC Milan, becoming a regular in Serie A and earning international recognition with Germany.

The need for reinforcement in defence has been heightened by the age profile of some of Newcastle’s current options. Fabian Schar’s advancing years and the physical demands of a congested fixture schedule make the acquisition of a younger alternative a logical step.

Forward Search Intensifies Amid Isak Uncertainty

While the Thiaw deal marks positive progress, Newcastle’s search for attacking reinforcements has been less fruitful. The Daily Mail revealed that “The Magpies have had no luck in their search for a new forward after star man Alexander Isak made it clear he wants to leave and join Liverpool.”

This summer’s striker hunt has been defined by near misses. Benjamin Sesko opted to join Manchester United, adding to a list of failed pursuits including Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo and Hugo Ekitike. The frustration is compounded by the fact that the new Premier League season is just one week away.

Eddie Howe’s recruitment team have now turned their attention to Porto striker Samu Aghehowa. The 21-year-old Nigerian enjoyed a prolific campaign last season, scoring 27 goals in 45 matches for the Portuguese side, including two against Manchester United in the Europa League group stage.

According to the report, “David Ornstein of The Athletic claims that Newcastle are now considering a move for Porto’s Aghehowa. He adds that no formal approach has been made as of yet and there is no guarantee that it will happen.”

Aghehowa Profile and Potential Impact

Aghehowa joined Porto from Atletico Madrid and quickly adapted to life in Portugal, becoming one of the standout young forwards in European football. His five-year contract runs until 2029 and contains a €100 million release clause, meaning any transfer would likely require significant financial commitment from Newcastle.

With Isak’s future unresolved and no replacement yet secured, Aghehowa represents a gamble, but one with potentially high rewards. His pace, movement and finishing ability would complement Newcastle’s current attacking options and provide a long-term replacement should Isak depart.

The Magpies’ forward line already has depth with Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon, but both have fitness considerations and stylistic differences to Isak. From a Newcastle supporter’s perspective, the acquisition of Malick Thiaw is exactly the kind of deal fans have been hoping for. At 24, he combines the right blend of youth and top-level experience, and crucially, he arrives from a club with a strong defensive pedigree in AC Milan. Schar has been a fantastic servant, but the planning for his eventual successor needed to start now, and this signing delivers on that front.

The forward situation, however, is where the anxiety lies. The uncertainty around Alexander Isak’s future has overshadowed much of the summer. Losing a player of his calibre to Liverpool, a direct top-four rival, would be a bitter blow, and the lack of concrete progress in securing a replacement is concerning. Samu Aghehowa is exciting, but without a formal bid yet, it feels like the club is still in reactive mode rather than proactive planning.

With just a week before the season starts, the hope is that Dan Ashworth’s replacement in the recruitment department can finalise at least one more attacking addition. Newcastle fans will be buoyed by the Thiaw news, but they know all too well that without greater firepower up front, it will be difficult to match last season’s ambitions, especially with rivals strengthening across the board.
