Fans always want top-level quality, but they also want players who are hungry for the badge, the challenge and the pressure that comes with Stamford Bridge.

The £64m figure is substantial, so there will naturally be debate over value. But the market for elite young midfielders, especially those with Premier League experience, is fierce. Chelsea have been stung before by waiting too long, allowing prices to rise or rivals to get involved. If the recruitment team believe Scott can become a cornerstone midfielder for the next five years, then acting decisively has merit.
