Liverpool are facing a significant summer decision over Ibrahima Konate, with interest in the France international gathering pace and his Anfield future now looking increasingly uncertain.
Konate, whose Liverpool contract expires this summer, has been the subject of sustained speculation for much of the past year. Talks over an extension had appeared to offer some encouragement earlier in 2026, particularly when the defender suggested there was a “big chance” he would remain at the club next season.
However, the situation has shifted. Reports in France now indicate that several of Europe’s biggest clubs are ready to move, with Liverpool at risk of losing a player they signed from RB Leipzig in 2021 after triggering his £35 million release clause.
According to L’Equipe’s Hugo Delom, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea are all considering offers for Ibrahima Konate.
“Real Madrid, Bayern and Chelsea are in the ranks.”
That level of interest reflects both the player’s pedigree and the rarity of a centre back with Konate’s physical profile, Champions League experience and Premier League background becoming available without a transfer fee.
L’Equipe added further detail on the scale of the interest:
“Offensives concrete enough for them to make the Frenchman think. Real Madrid, for example, has always maintained contact to try to seduce the former Sochaux. Bayern Munich too. In England, Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea intend to try their luck. Konate is not expected to travel to the United States for the World Cup on June 10 knowing his future.”

For Liverpool, the issue is no longer simply whether Konate stays. It is how the club reached this point with a player entering what should be the peak years of his career.
At 27, Konate remains a defender of considerable value. His pace, strength and recovery defending have made him an important figure at Anfield, even during spells when injuries have interrupted his rhythm.
Arne Slot’s side won the Premier League in 2024/25 and have continued to evolve since then, making squad planning even more important. Losing Konate on a free transfer would leave Liverpool needing to replace a high calibre centre back while receiving no fee to reinvest.
Liverpool have often been praised for their structured approach to squad building, yet this situation would inevitably prompt scrutiny. Konate was signed for a substantial fee, developed across several seasons and became a senior member of the defensive group.
Allowing that asset to leave for nothing would invite questions over timing, negotiation strategy and whether the club should have acted earlier once it became clear that an agreement was proving difficult.
There is also the emotional element. Konate has been a popular figure with Liverpool supporters and, if he does leave, he may do so without the kind of Anfield farewell usually afforded to long serving players.
With Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea all alert to the opportunity, Konate has no shortage of options. Liverpool, meanwhile, must decide whether there is still a route to an agreement or whether planning for his departure has already begun.
Either way, the coming weeks look set to define one of the most important defensive decisions of Liverpool’s summer.
