Dani Ceballos’ challenge on Pablo Barrios during Real Madrid’s recent derby against Atletico Madrid became a topic of debate.
As reported before, many in the Atletico camp believed the tackle should have led to a red card, but the match officials thought otherwise, leading to widespread discussions about the decision.
The incident took place in the 24th minute of the game when Ceballos attempted to clear a loose ball.
Instead of making clean contact with the ball, he caught Barrios on the leg, leaving the Atletico midfielder in clear distress on the pitch.
Despite the tackle looking severe, the referee, Soto Grado, opted not to show a red card. To add to the controversy, VAR did not intervene to recommend a review either.

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the decision to avoid a red card was influenced by specific circumstances surrounding the incident. One key factor was that Barrios had dived to the ground in an attempt to take control of the ball.
If both players had remained on their feet, the situation might have been viewed as a case of serious rough play, likely prompting a harsher punishment.
The decision not to call Soto Grado to the VAR monitor for a second look was also explained. The VAR referee, Munuera Montero, reportedly did not see it as a clear-cut case for expulsion.
In such instances, the interpretation of the on-field referee takes precedence. Soto Grado deemed the challenge only worthy of a yellow card, which is why no further review was conducted.
This decision continues to fuel debates within the Atletico Madrid camo, with many questioning the consistency of refereeing standards.
The incident serves as yet another reminder of how interpretations of the same situation can vary significantly, shaping the outcomes of crucial moments in high-stakes matches.
