La Liga staged its first retro matchday at the weekend, with top-flight clubs wearing kits inspired by iconic designs from their past. San Mamés provided one of the backdrops as Athletic faced Villarreal.

According to El Correo, the newspaper marked the occasion with a double-page spread of black-and-white images from yesterday’s match at San Mamés, a nod to bygone eras.

The pictures, shaped by shorter lenses and period design choices, differ from today’s coverage. Wider frames gave the crowd greater prominence, along with team walkouts and other scenes that now sit behind close-ups of penalties, headed goals and saving stops.

Referees also leaned into the theme, wearing vintage yellow or red kits with black checks and the old RFEF crest on the chest, a look promoted by the Comité Técnico de Árbitros. Mallorca, Osasuna, Real Sociedad, Alavés, Barcelona, Oviedo and Villarreal took part.

At San Mamés, Athletic’s strip paid tribute to a modernising spell from 1970 to 1975 that shaped decades to come. Milestones included reclaiming the club’s original name, building and opening the Lezama facilities, and standing by the club’s philosophy despite the transfer market opening to foreign players.

That era also brought the 1973 Copa triumph over Castellón at the Vicente Calderón. A day to remember.
