In a major update, the Executive Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has approved a modification to the Regulatory Guidelines and Competition Rules to eliminate extra time from the Spanish Super Cup, in both men’s and women’s formats.

Barcelona will be involved in the Spanish Super Cup this season, set to be played in 2025 in Saudi Arabia.

The Blaugrana qualified for the tournament by virtue of a second-place finish in La Liga. They will be facing off against Athletic Club – the winners of last season’s Copa del Rey in the first semi-finals.

Real Madrid and Mallorca will be the other two teams in the competition and will face off in the second semi-finals.

Both matches and the finals will now be played without the stipulation of extra time, with the game going straight to penalties if there is no winner after 90 minutes.

With this modification, the RFEF responds to requests from clubs participating in these tournaments and aims to reduce the players’ competitive minutes, following similar changes made in other competitions such as the Copa del Rey and the Federation Cup.

This change also aligns with what is being implemented in similar competitions at European and global levels.

Therefore, if a match remains tied at the end of regular time, the winner will be determined directly through a penalty shootout.
