In a notable development, the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) Delegate Commission has approved the decision to remove extra time from all of its matches, including both the semi-finals and the final.

This change affects the 2025 edition where Real Madrid will defend their Super Cup crown, against Barcelona, Mallorca, and Athletic Club.

The tournament structure sees Athletic Club facing Barcelona in the first semi-final, while Real Madrid will take on Osasuna in the second match.

Earlier today, the RFEF approved a modification to the Regulatory Guidelines and Competition Rules, eliminating extra time from all Spanish Super Cup matches, affecting both men’s and women’s tournaments.

This significant change comes as the RFEF responds to requests from participating clubs, aiming to reduce the physical demands on players.

The move follows similar modifications already implemented in other Spanish competitions, such as the Copa del Rey and the Federation Cup, aligning with emerging trends in European and worldwide football competitions.

Under the new format, if matches remain tied after regular time, teams will proceed directly to a penalty shootout to determine the winner, potentially affecting how Real Madrid and other teams approach these crucial encounters.

Real Madrid won the tournament last year, defeating Barcelona 4-1, and will be hoping to add another trophy to their cabinet this season.
