Richard Hughes makes his mind up about £29m Liverpool star

Liverpool's first-team squad let their fans down massively during the 2025-26 season.

Most people expected the Anfield outfit to put up a decent fight for the title but, in the end, they finished in fifth.

This was a massive fall from grace from the 2024-25 campaign, especially after they spent £450 million on improving their ranks.

Thanks to their poor form, changes will obviously need to be made and now, Richard Hughes seems to have already figured out what he wants to do with one Liverpool star.

Liverpool do not want Jeremie Frimpong as their right back

Jeremie Frimpong was clearly signed to be Trent Alexander-Arnold's replacement.

The Dutchman was one of the Bundesliga's best attacking full-backs with his performances under Xabi Alonso rather astonishing.

However, due to injuries and his unreadiness, he's not hit the mark which has forced some of his teammates such as Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones to be used as a right-back.

And, while this experiment probably went better than most people thought it would, it's clear that a natural right-back is needed.

A new report from David Lynch via Anfield Index covers this with the journalist even claiming that Liverpool don't want Frimpong as their first choice right-back next term, especially with Conor Bradley's return date still undecided.

"I don’t get the sense they want to be playing Frimpong there for the majority of the season," he said.

"They want to kind of put him in a position where, yeah, he can play the odd game at right back.

"The amount you find yourself under diagonal crossfield balls and those sorts of things, that’s not really his strength."

Liverpool must figure out who they want at right-back as soon as possible

With Denzel Dumfries and Lutsharel Geertruida unlikely to join Liverpool this summer, the Reds will need to find a solution to their right-back woes somewhere else.

The aforementioned duo were heavily linked with the Reds during the January transfer window but, with both of them looking likely to join other clubs, Liverpool will have to eye up some new targets.

Even though Bradley would be their preferred starting option, the fact that his return date hasn't been shared yet is a massive worry.

And, with Joe Gomez and Wataru Endo seemingly fairly injury prone, a new right-back is essential.

Marco Palestra and Daniel Banjaqui are two options being linked with a move but, since there are so many areas of the Reds' team that need upgrading, it's unclear who their main targets will be as, they can't spend too much on one position.
