Real Madrid’s election has sharpened, Enrique Riquelme setting the agenda and Florentino Pérez defending Anas Laghrari. According to El Larguero, Riquelme has been urged to delay any announcements on his sporting appointments.
Pérez offered no explanation for Laghrari’s rapid elevation to delegate member. Riquelme has pledged a “Ciudad del socio” and a 50% fee cut if the Champions League is not won.
Cesc Fábregas has been considered, seen as a Xabi Alonso style coach. The Como manager is settled in Italy and a Madrid link could jar, given talk of him as a possible Barcelona successor to Hansi Flick.
Other bench names floated are Pochettino and Raúl, while mooted moves for Nagelsmann or Arteta are dismissed. The Portugal coach, Roberrto Martínez, has also been mentioned, and José Mourinho has been tied up by Pérez.
On players, Riquelme says he has two international stars agreed, one of them Spanish. He indicated he would like to advance names on Saturday and added that, if he is president, a Real Madrid player will have played the World Cup with Spain.
That Spanish player is widely taken to be Rodrigo Hernández, the Manchester City midfielder and 2024 Ballon d’Or. Any reveal could unsettle Spain’s camp starting on Saturday, and public backing of Riquelme might complicate a Bernabéu move.
Fabián Ruiz has also been floated, contracted to Paris Saint-Germain until 2029, and Bernardo Silva is another possible card after leaving Manchester City as a free agent.
