According to ExpressAndStar.com, Rob Edwards has hailed Wolves history-maker Jerome Abbey and says the club’s academy successes should inspire others.
Aged 16 years, eight months and eight days, the midfielder came off the bench at Burnley to become Wolves’ youngest ever Premier League player and the second youngest in the club’s history.
Edwards said Abbey impressed when introduced, calling him a talented, likeable youngster, and felt the chance was taken well. He highlighted the work of staff across a strong academy and pointed to Mateus Mane’s first-team breakthrough and Tom Edozie’s opportunities this season as examples. He hopes that, if coaches feel youngsters are ready, there will be chances for them.
The head coach also underlined that standards remain high, saying players must be good enough. He felt Abbey merited his debut, while accepting the teenager still has a lot of work ahead.
Mane has established himself under Edwards and, after Abbey’s debut, senior striker Adam Armstrong expressed delight for both prospects. He described the feeling of a first appearance as amazing, and said the pair are top talents who can only improve.
