One of the most hotly anticipated matchups on the League One fixture list took place on Monday night as Birmingham City went head-to-head with Wrexham.

A 3-1 victory for the Blues left them level on points with the Red Dragons, but Chris Davies' side remain second in the league table behind the Red Dragons courtesy of goal difference.

However, the West Midlands outfit have a game in hand on Phil Parkinson's side, so there is every chance that the Blues could claim top spot in the coming weeks.

But despite the footballing talent on show at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park on Monday night, this was a fixture of high interest in both the UK and the US, due to the fact that NFL icon Tom Brady has stakes in Birmingham, while Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney co-own the Red Dragons.

As a result, high profile figures attended the game, including McElhenney, as well as English football legend David Beckham, who also boasts a starring role in the US soccer scene.

Following the Red Dragons' defeat to the Blues, the Wrexham co-owner wrote on X: "Great side that.

"Congrats.

"Thank you for the hospitality.

"Your fans and staff were class.

"See you in January.

"I’m guessing we’ll both be ready…."

The Red Dragons took the early lead on three minutes when Jack Marriott forced the ball home following a scrappy piece of play, but less than 20 minutes later, big money signing Jay Stansfield equalised for the Blues.

By the hour mark, the hosts held a commanding 3-1 lead courtesy of Stanfield's second of the night, before Tomoki Iwata's effort established the two-goal cushion.

Red Dragons victory is a huge result for the Blues

Prior to their meeting with the Blues, the Red Dragons were one of only three League One sides who boasted an unbeaten record, despite having played one more match than the vast majority of their third tier rivals.

But after beating Parkinson's side, it is now Davies' men who remain one of two unbeaten teams in the league, alongside Stockport County, who pipped the Red Dragons to the League Two title last term.

The Blues were already heavy promotion favourites, but now that they have sealed a convincing win over the current league leaders, many League One fans will already wonder if the West Midlands outfit can be stopped.

The Blues' next three fixtures look tough on paper, as they lock horns with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town, who were relegated from the Championship alongside them, either side of a clash with Peterborough United, who reached the third tier play-offs last season.

However, the Millers are currently way off the pace, and sit 17th in the table, after winning just one game in six attempts, while their solitary victory saw them defeat Huddersfield 2-1, but Steve Evans' men were only able to score twice after falling behind against ten men.

And while the Blues' upcoming meeting with the Terriers, who defeated last season's play-off finalists Bolton Wanderers 4-0 on Saturday, looks tough, it seems that Davies' men are currently in a vein of form in which they are able to triumph over whoever stands in their way following their big Wrexham win.
