Robert Andrich and Kai Havertz were on target as Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal drew 1-1 in Germany, leaving the last-16 tie level.

According to Get German Football News, Andrich was named their Man of the Match.

The first half brought few clear chances as the hosts matched Mikel Arteta’s side and restricted them well. Gabriel Martinelli came closest, his left-footed effort hitting the post on 19 minutes.

Soon after the restart Leverkusen went ahead, Andrich heading in from Alejandro Grimaldo’s inswinging corner delivery.

The hosts had openings to add a second but could not take them. Late in the match they conceded a debatable penalty, and former home favourite Havertz converted from the spot.

Kasper Hjulmand’s team almost claimed a statement win against one of Europe’s in-form sides, and if they build on the positives a quarter-final place remains possible. Christian Kofane had said before kick-off that bravery was required.

The draw sends the tie to a decider at the Emirates Stadium, where Leverkusen will face a hostile atmosphere in the second leg.
