Robert Lewandowski has been tipped to leave Barcelona once his contract runs out this summer.

Barcelona have an option to extend his contract for another 12 months, but Polish legend and former UEFA vice-president Zbigniew Boniek believes it’s time for his countryman to move on.

Lewandowski’s influence at Barcelona has diminished this season.

The 37-year-old has started in just seven of his 13 La Liga appearances, with Hansi Flick moving Ferran Torres ahead of him in the pecking order.

Despite his situation, Lewandowski has netted eight times in the league. Only Kylian Mbappe (18), Torres (11), and Vedat Muriqi (nine) have scored more league goals than the Barcelona marksman.

With his influence starting to wane, Boniek has tipped Lewandowski to call time on his trophy-laden three-year spell with Barcelona this season.

The ex-UEFA vice-president suggests Lewandowski is no longer the formidable striker he once was, with the sharpness that set the course for his illustrious career starting to fade.

“It’s an inevitable process,” Boniek said (via SPORT). “Robert is 38 and has aged a bit. As long as he keeps playing football, he’ll score goals, but he’s not the same player he was a few years ago.”

Barcelona have already started preparing a succession plan for Lewandowski. They’re planning another stunning raid on his former employers, Bayern Munich, with Barcelona eyeing a move for Harry Kane.

Despite approaching the twilight of his career, Lewandowski’s services will still be in high demand once his departure from Barcelona is announced.

The Polish striker has already been linked with a move to Serie A, with AC Milan keen to lure him to San Siro Stadium on a free transfer.

However, Boniek has warned Lewandowski against a move to the Italian top flight, admitting he hopes to see his countryman in the United States or an Arab country.

“The captain is ageing gracefully, and I hope to see him in the United States or some Arab country next season,” Boniek added. “He’ll play two more years to earn some extra money.

“If he ended up at San Siro, he’d have problems. Playing in Italy is harder than in Spain. In my opinion, his signing for Milan doesn’t seem likely, especially since Italian clubs don’t pay as much as Spanish ones.

“Milan has Luka Modric, who’s 40, in midfield, but being a centre forward in Serie A means constantly clashing with 190cm tall centre-backs, elbowing players, and committing fouls.

“I don’t know if that would be a challenge for Robert.”
