Roberto Martinez says belief in Cristiano Ronaldo’s longevity should not waver, even with the forward 41 at this World Cup and 45 in 2030, when Portugal co-host with Spain and Morocco.

"Nobody should doubt it," Martinez said when asked if Ronaldo could play in 2030. "He has earned it." He spoke to Cadena Ser.

Ronaldo debuted at 18 in August 2003. He holds Portugal records with 226 caps, 80 more than Joao Moutinho, and 143 goals, 96 more than Pauleta.

He led Portugal to the Euro 2016 title and to fourth place at the 2006 World Cup, the country’s best finish since third in 1966. A penalty against Ghana at the 2022 finals made him the first player to score at five World Cups.

Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are on course to become the first players to feature at six World Cups, with the tournament scheduled from 11 June to 19 July.

"I have worked with many players who won a Champions League or a Ballon d'Or, and the next day they lose motivation. What we see with Ronaldo shows a different mentality."

"I think having that objective allows you to endure. There is a genetic aspect and the work he does, he uses everything to help his body, and his mentality." Portugal, drawn in Group K at the first 48-team World Cup, open on 17 June against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Houston.
