Atletico Madrid have identified Liverpool’s Andy Robertson as their top target at left-back this summer.

The La Liga club, who have struggled for consistency on the left side of defence, view the 31-year-old as an ideal candidate to strengthen their backline.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Atletico rate Robertson higher than AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez, who had previously been considered but was deemed too expensive.

Liverpool’s expected signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth has intensified speculation surrounding Robertson’s role under manager Arne Slot.

For the first time since arriving at Anfield in 2017, Robertson may no longer be the Reds’ undisputed starter, following a mixed 2024/25 campaign in which he was dropped for key matches.

Despite Liverpool’s official stance that the veteran full-back remains an important player, Atletico believe a deal could be more achievable than Milan’s demands for Hernandez.

Robertson, who has made 342 appearances for the club since joining from Hull City, has just one year left on his contract.

“We’ve had good discussions with the club,” he told reporters. “What the future holds, I’m not sure.”

He acknowledged Liverpool’s interest in signing Kerkez and did not dismiss the possibility of a change.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid already confirmed, Robertson moving to the Spanish capital to join Atletico would be another high-profile exit from Anfield.

Atletico have prioritised the left-back position after underwhelming seasons from Javi Galan and Reinildo, and view Robertson as a proven winner who offers experience and leadership.

His CV includes two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup and a Club World Cup.

While Robertson has publicly declared his desire to stay, Atletico’s interest may soon test that resolve.
