According to Marca, the forward has damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will be out for at least six months, missing the rest of the season and the World Cup. Real Madrid could issue a statement soon.

The blow comes after a damaging defeat by Getafe that further frayed relations with supporters, who are now looking to president Florentino Pérez. Next up are Celta at Balaídos on Friday six March and Manchester City at home on 11 March in the Champions League last 16. With the Supercopa gone and a Copa exit, league form is also stuttering.

The injury was detected on Monday night and confirmed on Tuesday after tests. Rodrygo had only just returned against Getafe, playing a little over half an hour, following a month out with tendinitis. He had already missed the previous five matches.

Álvaro Arbeloa must now find solutions with resources stretched. For Celta, Mbappé remains out with a knee sprain, Franco Mastantuono is suspended after his late red card, and Huijsen and Carreras are also banned. Only two first team forwards are available, Vinicius Junior and Gonzalo.

Bellingham, Asencio, Ceballos and Militao are also sidelined, while Alaba and Camavinga have fitness problems. There is significant internal unease at the volume of injuries, and Mbappé has signalled discontent with the club’s medical staff over his damaged knee. For many supporters, hope now rests with the Champions League.
