Manchester United’s January planning is beginning to crystallise, with movement expected at both ends of the pitch. According to Fabrizio Romano, the pursuit of Antoine Semenyo has escalated rapidly, while discussions are also taking place over Joshua Zirkzee’s future as United weigh short term needs against longer term squad balance.

United’s league position, seventh but only four points clear of Bournemouth in 14th, underlines the fragility of their campaign. Ruben Amorim’s side were arguably the better team in the recent 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, yet absences told. Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui were all away on Africa Cup of Nations duty, leaving United thin on attacking options and reliant on youth from the bench.

Semenyo has become a central figure in United’s thinking. Romano has described the situation as “developing quickly”, with United now locked in what he called a “direct battle” with Manchester City for the Bournemouth winger.
“Antoine Semenyo’s situation is now developing quickly, with multiple top clubs actively involved,” Romano said.“As previously reported, Liverpool made contact in November but did not proceed further at that time. Now, however, Manchester United and Manchester City are in a direct battle for the Bournemouth winger.”
United’s interest is not passive. Romano confirmed that both Manchester clubs have stepped up engagement with the player’s representatives.
“Both United and City have held direct contacts with Semenyo’s camp between Monday and Tuesday, and again over the weekend, to understand his intentions and the feasibility of a deal.”

The structure of the deal is clear. “The £65m release clause is active but only until the 10 January, allowing Bournemouth time to source a replacement. Because of this, the player’s decision is central.”
Romano also outlined the wider context, noting, “At the moment, Tottenham are not advancing on the deal, while Liverpool are monitoring the situation closely, especially in light of the Isak injury. What Semenyo decides will be key, and this deal could have a domino effect elsewhere.”
While United explore a move for Semenyo, there is parallel momentum around Zirkzee. The Netherlands international is seeking more regular football ahead of the World Cup, and January may provide that opportunity.
Roma are leading the chase. The Serie A club are described as the side “pushing” hardest, with Romano confirming direct talks with the player’s camp.

“I can reveal that a meeting took place last week between Roma and the agents of Joshua Zirkzee, with further progress made in conversations this week,” Romano said.“Roma consider the player a top priority, and manager Gian Piero Gasperini is pushing to bring him in as early as January.”
United’s position, however, is cautious. “Manchester United, however, are reluctant to give the green light at the start of the window,” Romano added. “With several absences already, including Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo heading to AFCON, Bruno Fernandes injured, and Kobbie Mainoo unavailable United are short of options.”
From Zirkzee’s perspective, the appeal is clear. “From the player’s side, Roma are making progress. Zirkzee is open to the move, attracted by the promise of regular football, a central role, and the chance to shine again in Serie A, where he previously impressed with Bologna.”
As January approaches, United’s strategy appears interconnected. Any movement on Zirkzee may hinge on progress for Semenyo, with Amorim tasked with navigating a window that could define the direction of his first season in charge.
