Liam Rosenior is digging himself deeper into the trenches in the battle over whether his goalkeeper policy is the right one.

The tensions over Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation continued well into the embargoed section of Liam Rosenior’s press conference yesterday.

The Chelsea boss has insisted that he doesn’t have a defined number one – he’s going to keep putting in whoever is in better form. So far it’s been a disaster, leading to mistakes from both his options in goal and putting him in a tricky spot for today’s game against Newcastle.

Rosenior says he would have treated Cech or Courtois just the same

It was put to him in the presser that the great keepers of Chelsea’s past didn’t compete like that. But Rosenior’s counter was that those great goalies had just earned their place with their form, to the point there were never questions about it.

“Those shirts are earned on form, those shirts were earned on performance. When Petr Cech came here he was a very young goalkeeper. Same with Thibaut Courtois. They earned their time and reputation with their performances they gave on the pitch.”

Perhaps if we had a goalkeeper even half as good as Cech or Courtois the situation would be comparable…
