Roy Hodgson, 78, has been appointed head coach of Bristol City for the remainder of the season. He will oversee the final seven matches.

He succeeds Gerhard Struber following his dismissal, and his first game is at Charlton Athletic on three April, according to NY Times.

The appointment ends his hiatus since leaving Crystal Palace in February 2024, extending a coaching career that spans five decades.

City were in the play-off positions earlier in the season, but are now 16th in the Championship and winless in six, a sequence that includes an FA Cup fourth-round defeat by League One side Port Vale.

Hodgson said he had productive talks with the board, was excited to help until the end of the season, and would get straight to work targeting a positive performance on Good Friday.

Chief executive Charlie Boss said the appointment is about more than results over the run-in, thanking Struber and stressing Hodgson will help set standards and values for future success.

Hodgson has taken charge of 1,269 matches, with notable spells at Inter and Liverpool, as well as Blackburn Rovers, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion. His English managerial career began at City in 1982 after four years at Halmstad, and he has led 17 clubs and four national teams, including England from 2012 to 2016.
