Roy Keane has argued Danny Welbeck would be a better England option than Leeds United’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, amid debate over the back-up striker role.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Calvert-Lewin has received his first England call-up in five years for March, joining a 35-man group to face Uruguay and Japan before it is trimmed for this summer’s World Cup.
Harry Kane remains the undisputed starter, while contenders have struggled. Ollie Watkins is short of his best and Dominic Solanke has just three Premier League goals. Calvert-Lewin hit his 10th of the season against Nottingham Forest in February and was the joint-leading English scorer until last weekend, when Welbeck moved to 12 with a brace at Liverpool, intensifying scrutiny of his omission.
Ian Wright welcomed Calvert-Lewin’s inclusion but suggested Welbeck could also be assessed in camp. Keane, who worked with Welbeck at Manchester United, went further, saying the Brighton forward is a better option than Solanke or Calvert-Lewin and valuing his presence around a squad.
Selections for the World Cup remain open, with two warm-up friendlies and another two months of Premier League football to inform decisions. Calvert-Lewin will aim to impress on England duty, then build on his season to help keep Leeds above the drop. Michael Owen has advised the striker to be himself, contribute positively around camp, take any minutes he gets and show he can be an impact substitute in the summer.
