Ruben Amorim admitted that Man Utd’s play was “really confused” as they failed to control proceedings in defeat to Brentford on Saturday afternoon.
Igor Thiago put the Bees ahead after just seven minutes before doubling the hosts lead in the 20th minute.
The Red Devils pulled one back shortly after when Benjamin Sesko scored from close range for his first goal for the club since his £74m transfer from RB Leipzig.
United were handed the perfect opportunity to equalise in the second half when referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot after Bryan Mbeumo was fouled in the box by Nathan Collins. However, captain Bruno Fernandes saw his penalty saved by Caoimhín Kelleher.
Brentford sealed a second consecutive victory over Amorim’s side when Mathias Jensen fired the ball past a hapless Altay Bayindir in the 95th minute.
“The feeling is always the same,” Amorim told TNT Sports. “We want to win. We didn’t control the game. We played the game of Brentford. We were really confused, second balls, first balls, set pieces. The crucial moments they were against us. Tough to lose again, but we need to think about the next one.
“In some moments [I saw the fight seen against Chelsea.] But we can do better. That’s the main point.
“The first ball was a long ball after a recovery, we worked on that in the week. Set pieces, we worked on that in the week. We knew that the long balls, one first touch and they had the opportunity. We worked on that during the week, we have to do better.
“Today, we didn’t play our game. Just some moments, we had control and pushed them to the back. We have to play our game, not the opponent’s game.
“To lose at that club, it hurts a lot. We have to look at the next one. Everything is important in this club, not just the games at home.”
Collins was fortunate to avoid a red card for the foul on Mbeumo that resulted in the penalty. The Republic of Ireland defender appeared to deny a goalscoring opportunity, but a lengthy VAR check concluded that Mbeumo was not in control of the ball when he was pulled down.
“They told me Bryan was not in control of the ball, I think he was not in control of the ball because he was pulled,” Amorim revealed in his post-match press conference.
