The club said in a statement that Antonio Rüdiger has extended his Real Madrid contract to June 2027, keeping the 33-year-old at least one more season.

The agreement had been in place for weeks and folds into José Mourinho’s project, with 2026-27 set to be his fifth campaign at the Bernabéu.

Rüdiger joined in summer 2022 from Chelsea on a free. He has since become their most dependable defender, with Éder Militao and David Alaba repeatedly sidelined. He was key to the 2024 Champions League triumph over Borussia Dortmund.

The just-completed campaign brought his lowest involvement, 2,200 minutes across 26 matches, curtailed by a muscle injury through much of the opening months. When fit, he usually started, partnering Militao or Huijsen.

He had offers from overseas, such as Saudi Arabia, but chose to extend his stay. Mourinho currently has five centre-backs, with Huijsen, Militao and Asencio continuing, the latter free to leave. Ibrahima Konaté is also being added on a free, a move not yet announced by Madrid.

News of the renewal arrived 24 hours after the Cucurella signing was announced and while Rüdiger is on international duty. He featured for Germany in the second half of their rout of Curaçao, replacing Jonathan Tah for a brief outing.

He framed the renewal as pride and a commitment to help reverse recent setbacks alongside team-mates. Injuries led some to write him off, which only fuelled him, and he stressed unity as the route forward.
