Benfica are increasingly optimistic about appointing Marco Silva after a fresh meeting with Rui Costa, with previous differences now settled and a deal edging closer, though not yet agreed.

Record reports that Silva could earn around five million euros per season if he joins, which remains below the more than seven million on offer to stay at Fulham. The revised proposal has narrowed the gap and eased a major obstacle.

Earlier talks had been tense over salary, with the Fulham manager unhappy with the initial figures. Sunday’s decisive meeting reopened dialogue and brought the sides closer.

Rui Costa also underlined to the 48-year-old that he is Benfica’s top choice for next season, with no alternatives currently being pursued.

Silva wants significant influence over squad construction, the sporting strategy and planning for the new campaign before committing.

After a day of progress and extensive conversations, the conditions now look more favourable for an agreement in the coming days.
