With the Benfica job likely to open, Rui Costa faces a difficult call in the coming weeks, as José Mourinho’s exit, though at an impasse, is considered practically certain.
Record writes that Costa is to weigh three avenues, Marco Silva, Ruben Amorim or, failing either, a foreign coach out of contract.
Amorim could remain abroad. Silva has an offer to extend at Fulham. Benfica have not approached either candidate.
A hierarchy has been outlined, with Amorim viewed as the favourite at the Luz, while Silva is seen as easier to negotiate. Benfica do not plan to make approaches until the replacement process is set.
After two Portuguese appointments, Bruno Lage and José Mourinho, the hierarchy could return to the 2022/23 formula, hiring from abroad as with Roger Schmidt, whose immediate impact delivered the club’s 38th league title.
