Mohamed Salah has said Liverpool ‘owe the fans’ another Premier League crown after edging closer to the title with a 2-1 win over West Ham.

Goals from Luis Diaz and Virgil van Dijk secured three important points at Anfield and a win that moves Arne Slot’s side 13 points clear at the top.

After last weekend’s defeat at Fulham, Liverpool sought to issue a response and started strongly. The opener arrived on 18 minutes with the Reds moving from back to front quickly. Ibrahima Konate’s long pass released Mohamed Salah, who delivered a delightful outside-of-the-boot pass across goal. Waiting was Diaz, who tapped in the simplest of finishes.

West Ham improved after half-time and began to put the home side under pressure. Alisson denied Jarrod Bowen with a good save after the West Ham captain raced in behind.

The East Londoners eventually found an equaliser on 86 minutes, though it was a calamitous mix-up from the home side that levelled the game. Andy Robertson and Van Dijk got in each other’s way, with the latter’s attempted clearance diverting in off Robertson for an own goal.

Van Dijk atoned for that error just three minutes later. He freed himself in the box to meet Alexis Mac Allister’s corner kick for the winner.

Liverpool now need a maximum of just six points from their final six games to win the Premier League. The Reds have won just one league title in the last 34 years, which arrived during the pandemic-impacted 2019/20 season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Salah said Liverpool feel they ‘owe the fans’ another title to celebrate properly.

“It’s a good team (West Ham), to be fair, they have a good plan,” he said. “They managed to play better in the second half and they managed to score.

“I think in that stage the most important thing is to win the game and we did well in the last few minutes.

“We owe the fans one [a league title]. When we won it [in 2019-20] we won it in a lockdown. So, let’s go for it and win it. That’s the most important thing.”
