Santiago Montiel, the CA Independiente winger, has won the 2025 Puskas Award for the year's best goal.

According to L'Équipe, his acrobatic overhead kick from outside the box against Independiente Rivadavia in a league match earned the honour.

The cousin of Gonzalo Montiel is the third Argentine to claim the prize, following Erik Lamela and Alejandro Garnacho, last year's winner.

He topped a shortlist that featured Cagliari's superb team move finished by an unstoppable shot from Alessandro Deiola. Also nominated were Lamine Yamal, for a precise strike into the top left corner against Espanyol Barcelona, and Declan Rice, for his free-kick against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final.

In the women's category, Lizbeth Ovalle took the Marta Award for an audacious backheel. One of the most expensive signings in women's football history, she finished ahead of Marta, last year's winner.
