Santos are handling Neymar with care during the Fifa break after a diagnosis that the No 10’s body is overloaded, introducing two measures in the last free window before the final World Cup call-up. According to Globo.com, he underwent platelet-rich plasma treatment and had his workload reduced.
Platelet-rich plasma uses the player’s own blood to speed muscular and cellular recovery. It can be applied to injuries or to ease the wear from a heavy run of matches.
Absent from Brazil’s March friendlies, Neymar took advantage of the pause, with Santos not due back in action until the second, when they host Remo at Vila Belmiro in the Brasileirão.
The same procedure was also carried out this week on Gabriel Barbosa, Mayke and Zé Rafael, and Neymar was kept out of the first days of work at CT Rei Pelé. He returned on Tuesday, a day ahead of coach Cuca’s scheduled reporting date, focusing on gym and physical work.
He is expected to join Friday’s session on the pitch and begin integrating with the squad for next week’s game.
With the World Cup approaching, club and player are taking every precaution. With a place among the 26 only projected if he is 100% fit, per Carlo Ancelotti’s staff, Neymar has 14 games before the final call. He is unlikely to play them all, with coaches, medics and his representatives ready to control workload and rest him where needed.
Brazil’s squad announcement is scheduled for 18 May.
