A São Paulo court has accepted a complaint from prosecutors and made João Odair de Souza, known as Caveira, a former head of security and former driver at Corinthians, a defendant for embezzlement over events between 2018 and 2023, during the administrations of Andrés Sanchez and Duilio Monteiro Alves.

Ex-financial directors Matías Ávila and Wesley Melo, and former finance manager Roberto Gavioli, are also defendants for failing to supervise or prevent the diversion of club funds.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office says Caveira received more than R$ 3.4 million in cash in that period without providing receipts for most of it, that the money was advanced for presidential expenses, largely security services, and that significant sums went into his personal and company accounts, indicating misuse.

As the case proceeds, all four will have their passports seized and assets frozen, and they are barred from entering Parque São Jorge. The corrected total allegedly diverted is now estimated at R$ 7.3 million.

The complaint seeks reimbursement of R$ 6 million from Matías Ávila and R$ 250,000 from Wesley Melo for the club.

The investigations into cash delivered to staff began after a report revealed personal spending during the tenure of former president Duilio. Only Wesley Melo declined to comment when contacted.

Caveira maintains he rendered accounts to the club’s finance department and notes he was never challenged by the Fiscal Council.
