São Paulo are targeting free agent right-back Aurélio Buta after Cédric Soares failed to convince, with the club emerging as leading candidates to sign him, ESPN Brasil reports.

The 29-year-old Luso-Angolan international left Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of last season and is available on a free. São Paulo are seeking an experienced option on the right, familiar with European football.

The Brazilian side are also negotiating for Domingos Duarte, the 31-year-old centre-back who recently ended his spell at Getafe and is likewise a free agent.

If both moves advance, Dorival Júnior’s team could feature a strong Portuguese presence in defence. Cédric Soares is already in the squad, although he has not convinced and may leave this window.

Buta spent eight years in Benfica’s academy from 2011 to 2019, and has since played for Reims, Royal Antwerp, Eintracht Frankfurt and Copenhagen. A switch to South American football could be his next step.
