Speaking ahead of the Lionesses final game in 2025, Sarina Wiegman has reflected on what has been another incredible year for England.
Wiegman and the Lionesses secured another win in the European Championship for back to back successes.
For those who thought England women peaked during their Euro 2022 success, this year Sarina Wiegman’s team proved them wrong.
The Lionesses were once again a dominant force in world football and they were rewarded for another incredible year.
In Switzerland, England left it late almost every time during the knockouts, but Wiegman’s stars came up clutch when it mattered to win another major title.
Wiegman described the Euros as the highlight of her and England’s near-perfect year.
“It has been an incredible year again,” Wiegman said. “The team prepared for the EUROs and the camps that we had from February towards the EUROs were great.
“The tournament itself was incredible. On the pitch, it was insane how the games developed but off the pitch, we were really calm. I think I enjoyed it more than all of the other tournaments. It wasn’t just the experience, the team were so calm, composed and I really enjoyed that.
Despite such a strong summer, Wiegman revealed no new contract talks have taken place with England just yet.
“The homecoming has been a real highlight too. Having these four friendlies and being able to connect with the fans [has been great]. We were backed by 85,000 last Saturday and I think there’s 24,000 tickets sold [for Ghana] and that’s really incredible, I don’t take that for granted. I’m really looking forward to tomorrow.”
The Lionesses round off their year at St Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday night where they face Ghana.
England pummelled China in their penultimate game of the season over the weekend, but they are expecting a different style of game on Tuesday.
“Tomorrow is going to be a totally different game with different styles of play.” Wiegman said. “Of course, we have analysed Ghana and they have a clear structure of how they want to play.
“They can play direct and have a lot of pace on the ball. They have some rotations and we have to be aware of that.
“I don’t think it’ll be easy but I hope we make it easy ourselves and we play really well. We will see what happens.”
It is hard to imagine England scoring eight again this week but they will be very confident on closing out the Homecoming Tour with a win.
Sarina Wiegman could make a lot of changes against Ghana on Tuesday to give chances to players who got less minutes for the Lionesses this year.
