In the aftermath of a thrilling 3-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt this evening, Patrik Schick gave his account of Bayer Leverkusen's efforts.
“I think the first half was exactly what we wanted to play. We were given a clear task of what we had to do on the pitch.
"It wasn’t complicated, but it worked perfectly. I think the first half was very good from us. Of course, the second half was a little more difficult.
“It wasn’t easy to create something going forward. But we stayed very compact. The defenders did an incredible amount of work today,” he told Sky Germany.
The Czechia international also remarked on Leverkusen's new head coach Kasper Hjulmand and the first impressions he gave off.
“I think he [Hjulmand] is very likeable. He gave us a clear task. We played exactly that in the first half and that worked very well for me.
“In the second half we were a player less, that was a different game. But with the first penalty, that was the performance we always want to bring onto the pitch,” he added.
Debutant, Lucas Vázquez, explained it was a “very intense” start to life at Leverkusen and was delighted to cap off the performance with a victory.
“I experienced it with a lot of emotion. The first day is always something special and I think you could feel the atmosphere in the stadium - I really enjoyed it,” the Spaniard said.
