Nico Schlotterbeck will miss the rest of the 2026 World Cup after suffering a medial ligament injury to his left ankle. The Borussia Dortmund centre-back will be out for several months.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said the defender will be greatly missed, praising his build-up play, and said this could have been his World Cup. He also stressed they are well covered at centre-back with Jonathan Tah, Antonio Rüdiger, Waldemar Anton and Malick Thiaw.

Schlotterbeck was forced off during Germany’s 2-1 win over Côte d’Ivoire at the weekend.

With him sidelined, Rüdiger is expected to come into the starting XI alongside Tah in central defence.

He will initially remain with the squad.
