The 4,500 spectators at a sold-out Hemberg-Stadion in Iserlohn saw an intense and surprisingly physical clash in which BVB, who dominated for long spells of the opening 45 minutes, deservedly pulled into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Pascal Groß (13) and Serhou Guirassy (penalty, 41). After making 11 changes in the second period, the Black & Yellows' play slowed and Hakon Haraldsson reduced the deficit for the now more attack-minded French outfit (66). Karim Adeyemi hit back to make it 3-1 (68), before Thomas Meunier made it 3-2 to set up a close finish (82).

The scenario:

BVB were rounding off their first week of training with their second friendly, following the 8-1 win away to Sportfreunde Siegen on Wednesday, while OSC Lille were contesting their third pre-season game after a 5-0 win against French second-tier side Amiens and a 3-2 loss away to Italian first division side Como.

Personnel matters:

Duranville (rehab), Schlotterbeck, Can (both in fitness training), Süle, Haller, Drewes, Reyna, and Campbell (workload management) were not involved. Youngster Mané was drafted into the back three and played on the right alongside Anton and Bensebaini.

Tactics:

BVB played with a back three and Beier nominally level with Bellingham in attacking midfield. He pushed forward to support Guirassy in attack in certain situations, turning the 3-4-2-1 formation into a 3-4-1-2 in the process. Lille lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with a compact central midfield.

The match & analysis:

The Black & Yellows very, very clearly dominated the first 35 minutes against the French Europa League participant, who played in the Champions League last season. Barely 60 seconds had passed when Chevalier was tested by a Guirassy effort from a narrow angle. He was again on hand in the 14th minute when he kept out Bellingham's shot from the left corner of the six-yard box. The OSC Lille shot-stopper was beaten shortly afterwards, however. Bensebaini's header from a Ryerson corner was initially blocked, but Groß showed quick reactions on the follow-up and opened the scoring to make it 1-0 to BVB (13).

Amid pouring rain in Iserlohn, Chevalier subsequently thwarted dangerous opportunities for Sabitzer (19, 23), who also thundered one of his feared long-range strikes against the crossbar in the 25th minute. The team impressed with an aggressive, cohesive and dominant performance, and did not allow their opponents to enjoy any prolonged phases of possession until after the half-hour mark. A possible goal for the French outfit was then denied by Mané, who made a courageous intervention at the back post in the 42nd minute. BVB had gone 2-0 ahead shortly beforehand. After a reckless tackle by André, who challenged Svensson from behind in his own penalty area, a spot-kick was awarded to the Black & Yellows. Guirassy confidently slotted home (41).

There were five substitutions at the break, with the incoming Adeyemi and Brandt lining up in attack with Sabitzer behind them. Borussia no longer pressed as high as they had done in the opening half and increasingly allowed the opposition to have the ball. Dortmund's starting XI had been completely switched out by the hour-mark, and the young back three of Benkara, Lührs and Kabar now had to deal with the high pressing of last season's fifth-placed side from Ligue 1. Haraldsson made it 2-1 in the 66th minute, but Adeyemi was played in by Boyamba only two minutes later and re-established the two-goal cushion, which served to calm the match down somewhat for a while.

With eight minutes remaining, former Dortmund player Thomas Meunier broke through down the right side and fired the ball into the net with his left foot to pull another goal back. Lille thus punished Borussia for losing possession in midfield. But the score remained 3-2 to the Bundesliga team until the end.

Outlook:

The short pre-season period will already be over on Sunday of next week, when BVB will go up against Juventus at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK from 17:30 CEST as part of their season opening event.

Teams & goals
