Scotland will observe a public holiday on 15 June to celebrate the national team’s return to the World Cup, with the day off also applying to healthcare staff.

The measure was proposed by First Minister John Swinney in January and approved in February.

Scotland have not played a World Cup match since 1998.

Their official return comes at the 2026 tournament, which runs from 11 June to 19 July.

Scotland open their Group C campaign against Haiti at 3am in the night of 13 to 14 June, with Brazil and Morocco completing the section.
