Scotland know a narrow defeat could secure progress

Steve Clarke has big decisions to make with Scotland’s 2026 World Cup dreams on the line against Brazil on Wednesday evening.

After an opening 1-0 win over Haiti, and defeat to Morocco, who had opened their campaign with an impressive 1-1 draw with the Selecao, Scotland know a first-ever knockout stage berth is within their sights.

John McGinn scored in the sole win, Scotland’s only goal of the tournament so far, as Clarke lined his men up in a flat 4-4-2 in that game. Scott McTominay partnered Lewis Ferguson in the centre of midfield, while McGinn operated on the left. Lawrence Shankland and Che Adams were partnered up front.

Ryan Christie came in against the African champions, partnering Ferguson in the centre as McGinn was switched to the right in a 4-4-1-1 system, and McTominay moved further forward.

It gave Scotland more defensive solidarity, but stifled their attacking verve in a toothless display.

With a place in the history books up for grabs, Clarke must decide whether to stay sturdy or roll the dice. A narrow defeat may be enough to secure a last-32 spot.

Clarke should toe the line between realism and timidity: their fans want to see flair and goals - but they also do not want to see their team go out.

Ben Gannon-Doak was dropped against Morocco, but should come back in against the five-time World Cup winners as he is a clear a danger on either wing.

Tierney has struggled off injury fears, after going off against Morocco, and should keep his more advanced role on the opposite flank. He can help Andy Robertson create overloads so to not stymy his captain’s attacking instincts.

Christie will also likely get the nod again as Clarke looks to shore up his midfield. McTominay struggled against Morocco, but remains the star of the show for the Scots and will support a lone frontman in Adams, with Shankland an option off the bench.
