The 38-year-old scored all the goals as reigning champions Argentina beat Algeria 3-0 at the Kansas City Stadium in Missouri on Wednesday to kick-start their campaign.

Significantly, Messi's hat-trick against Vladimir Petkovic's side means he is now the joint-top scorer in World Cup history alongside former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, though France superstar Kylian Mbappe is also breathing down the Argentine's neck after scoring a stunning brace to inspire his nation's 3-1 triumph over Senegal.

Remarkably, the Barcelona legend also became Argentina's oldest ever World Cup scorer, exactly 20 years on from becoming their youngest ever scorer in the tournament.

The veteran inspired his nation to their 2022 tournament triumph in Qatar, and would further cement his claim as the sport's greatest ever player if he repeated that feat once again this year.

Messi and Argentina are next in action when they face Austria this Monday, and will look to secure their qualification for the knockout stages at the earliest possible opportunity.

Austria became the other Group J side to earn a victory in this summer's World Cup when they beat Jordan 3-1 on Wednesday, thanks to goals from Romano Schmid and Marko Arnautovic, either side of Yazan Abu Al-Arab's own goal.

Messi will overtake Klose in the World Cup's all-time top scorer list if he finds the target against Ralf Rangnick's side.

Meanwhile, former Nottingham Forest, Everton, Burnley, and Watford boss Dyche shared a photo posing with a Lego figure of himself on Instagram on Wednesday, captioned: "He might have the joint most World Cup goals, the most career goal contributions at the World Cup, and be the oldest player ever to score a World Cup hat trick. But his Lego man isn’t as good as this!"

Dyche has been out of managerial work since being sacked by Forest in February, and the City Ground outfit went on to secure their Premier League status under successor Vitor Pereira's stewardship.

The 54-year-old has kept supporters updated on his activities via the Instagram account he set up in May, and has also appeared as a guest on talkSPORT in recent weeks.

Dyche is still best-regarded for his 10-year stint with Burnley, having endured mixed spells with both Everton and Forest in more recent seasons.

While Dyche has humorously responded to Messi's latest hat-trick, the Argentina legend's own Instagram post has unsurprisingly attracted more attention.

The 38-year-old boasts an incredible 507 million followers, dwarfing the 236,000 followers Dyche has.

Meanwhile, after spearheading Argentina to victory over Algeria, Messi posted: "Happy for the start, grateful for the love and very proud to see this group compete again as they have been doing it all these years."

Former Manchester City hotshot Sergio Aguero was among those to comment, as he said: "You're the best there is."
